Mascara is my Friend
I was born a blonde. While there's nothing wrong with that, I look like a rabbit if I'm not wearing mascara. Seriously. As we age it's a given that less is better when it comes to makeup but eyes are important. It's what most people look at while speaking to you. Even if your eyelashes are dark, mascara enhances their length and thickness, both of which decrease with age. Think of eyes as artwork and the lashes the frame.
I have tried lots of brands of mascara, trying to find one that doesn't clump, makes my lashes look thicker and longer and comes off with soap and water. I have used waterproof mascara if I'm going to be swimming, or for weddings and funerals where I know I will make a spectacle of my emotional self, but it's not my preference. I think it takes too much effort to get it off and the rubbing and scrubbing, stretching and pulling, to remove it is not good for the skin around your eyes.
I once worked at a cosmetic counter in a now defunct department store for a high-end cosmetic company and had access to some very nice, very expensive makeup. I went crazy. I love makeup. And I got a discount, so, bonus! But, I discovered that expensive isn't always better, especially mascara. Many upscale brands also make the cheaper makeup under another label, but guess what? It's the same product. The only difference is the fancy packaging and the name.
My all time favourite mascara, the one I go back to time and time again is L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara in Black. I used to buy Blackest Black but as my eyes have aged I find that I look older when I wear it. Softer is better on an aging face. It also comes in Black Brown, Cobalt Blue and Burgundy.
Here are my eyes with mascara. What a difference.
I have my own personal rule that mascara is thrown out after 3 months. This is because I found out the hard way that the experts aren't kidding when they say makeup becomes contaminated with bacteria over time. I developed a sty on my eyelid and it was ugly, itchy and painful. Believe me when I say that you don't want this to happen to you.
Thanks for dropping by. Have a great day.
