Five Good Reasons for Change

You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em. (Line from The Gambler by Don Schlitz)

I have always believed that if I am trying to accomplish something and it becomes like King Sisyphus rolling a huge boulder endlessly up a steep hill it might be time to re-evaluate the situation. Such a time has come regarding my ambition to create my own skincare line for women over the age of 60. I’m being realistic. There have been so many roadblocks put into place to stop me from pursuing it that it is time to pay attention to the signs. It has been my experience that if the following 5 things are happening it’s time to change course. It’s a hard lesson I learned a long time ago and every once in awhile I get smacked in the face with it and need to trust what I know from the past and apply it to my present and my future.

1. YOU TRY AND TRY BUT IT IS GOING NOWHERE

If you are trying to accomplish something and it keeps fighting back, you are doing it wrong. I don’t believe that constant frustration is a good thing. Not only is it bad for your health it takes the joy out of it. Hitting constant dead ends is a good sign things aren’t going as planned.

2. EVERYTHING IS FALLING APART

Whether it’s the cooperation of others, your own attitude, or you're working hard and not getting any further ahead, if it’s all falling apart like the perfect storm it’s time to change direction. Sometimes that direction needs to be a complete 180°.

3. SIGNS FROM THE UNIVERSE

That’s right. Signs. They are everywhere and you don’t need to have a spiritual belief or connection to see them. I have my own beliefs which I don’t share but my personal experience has told me to look for the signs being sent my way. When I pay attention to them, things have a way of working out. When I ignore them it generally goes wrong.

4. YOUR INTUITION IS POKING YOU

Absolutely if it feels wrong, it is. Gut instinct, inner voice, hunches, call it what you will if you think back on your life and remember the times it didn’t feel right and then it wasn’t, that’s the feeling you should be paying attention to now. Your intuition is never wrong. Stay in touch with it.

5. YOUR BODY IS REACTING

If you are experiencing constant anxiety, worry, stress, unhappiness etc. all those negative energies will eventually show up physically. That headache you have today could have been caused by a stressor from a few days ago. That sore tummy you get whenever you see a relative you don’t like is no coincidence. If you stick with something that isn’t working your body will let you know. Unfortunately, it can become a life-threatening health issue. It is better to let it go. No matter what is happening, don't let it make you sick. If it doesn’t feel good or right, if you are uncomfortable, you need to STOP and ASSESS. Getting real with yourself is healthy. If you’re not happy, find out why. Don’t let feeling bad become your “new normal”.

WHAT TO DO WHAT TO DO

Don’t just stand there. Do something!

  • Make a list of the positives and the negatives. Which list is longer?

  • Write down your mood at the end of each day and try to think of reason why you are feeling the way you do.

  • Do the complete opposite of what you are doing now.

  • Walk away.

  • Change the course of action.

  • Brainstorm ideas with friends.

  • Get an opinion from someone you trust.

  • Keep a diary and look for patterns.

Whatever you do don’t wait for it to change on it’s own because if you do that you don’t control the narrative and since it’s your life you need to have that control.

The bottom line is if it’s your plan you can change it. Goals aren’t set in stone. They are fluid and you learn as you go. You will know when you are heading in the right direction because it will feel good. Right now, I am feeling good about my decisions and I haven't been able to say that for awhile.
